I used to love going to TRU, but it hasn’t been worth it since that new ordering and payment system was put in place. I kept trying because I love TRU, but the system is so difficult, I’ve just walked out and gone to other bars four out of the last five times I’ve tried. One time, I forgot my password to the ordering platform and couldn’t make a new profile because you can only have one profile per card. One time my phone was out of battery. Last night, I easily got a seat at the bar, but the software said it was going to be a 45 minute wait. I was looking right at the bartender right in front of me, but I couldn’t ask for a drink from him. Very frustrating and unnecessary system.
TRU Deli is my favorite spot in Chapel Hill. They have yummy sandwiches, wraps, salads, as well as a full bar. As well as being delicious and healthy, all of their food and drinks are reasonably priced, which is rare in the area. The facilities are always clean, staff friendly, with various seating inside, outside, or on their beautiful roof. This is a great spot for lunch, to study, or casual drinks. They have a more bar like vibe after about 10pm, when they stop serving food. My personal favorite part though is they are dog-friendly both in and outside!
Had my last drink at Tru last night. The app makes for an impersonal experience with the staff (who was very nice as we tried to get the app to work) and limits the bar entirely to what’s listed on the app.
For example, I wanted a simple drink - a French 75, which is gin + Prosecco + lemon juice … the bar has the ingredients, but it’s not in the app, I couldn’t order it. Again the bartender was apologetic, but his hands were tied as that was the only point of sale available. Husband wanted an old fashioned but again, not possible here any more.
The app is logical for food but created such a complicated system to get a cocktail that we didn’t really want.
Really disappointed with the ordering system here. I find it frankly classist that their system relies upon people having smartphones and cards. Many cities are banning card-only businesses because it creates an unnecessary barrier for people who may not have bank accounts. I know it’s probably to save money, but I’m sure they also don’t mind that lower income folks can’t access their bar…
Best place to have a laid back meal with your friends. Your order is completely customizable and is done online so you don’t have to call anyone over or go to the bar for a drink. Sandwiches are always very solid. You can just sit wherever as soon as you walk in. Staff is always extremely nice!
Tru has delicious salads and sandwiches for the best prices. I can get a salad with a ton of topping for less than 5 bucks. There is plenty of seating including outdoor seating.
Tru is easily my favorite place in Chapel Hill. It has a very cozy, laid back atmosphere, making it the perfect place to catch up with friends. I do wish the ordering system wasn’t completely virtual. The staff have always been incredibly friendly and helpful.
The best sandwiches with great choice of ingredients. You could put in anything and it always ends up tasting good. Must try in chapel hill, the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere as well.
Really like this place, but there are not really any vegetarian options. I wish their were plant proteins like tempeh, tofu, beyond meat, tofurkey etc. Even mozzarella would be nice so you could make a caprese sandwich. Love the cocktails though and staff is great.

Excellent place! Delicious sandwiches and the best beer on tap anywhere in Chapel Hill.
