I really want to love this place--it's adorable, and the outdoor seating is so fun for relaxing with friends after work. However, my last few visits have been marred by weird issues. I have been charged for ingredients that were not available (like, if you are out of avocados, ask me if I'd like to take them off my order rather than silently charging me for them anyway), and the service can be very slow, even just to get a glass of wine, when they are understaffed during peak hours.
Great, healthy build your own sandwiches and salads. I love the upstairs outdoor seating and couches inside and out. Friendly place. Changes to a wine bar in the evenings. Some day I'll come for the wine :)
This is a great place for a meal in the day time and a laid back bar at night. The food is build your own on an ipad, so it can be as expensive or cheap as you want depending on how much you add on (ex. Ham Sandwich vs. Sandwich with double bacon, double tomato, lettuce, avocado and you get the point). Overall, the food it good, the staff are nice, and the environment is very comfortable.
Came with a group of friends and for the majority of us, it was our first time there. The sandwiches themselves were nice, for deli sandwiches (when you've had one, you've almost had them all).
The ordering method (using a store iPad or going online to their store website) was kind of confusing at first, but can be adapted to easily.
There was much to be desired of the service, the restaurant was out of ham (a deli restaurant out of ham?? Really??), the sandwiches were slow to be made and come out and most of us had to wait upwards of 45 minutes to get our sandwiches (it was not a busy night by any means). The restaurant evidently doesn't carry much cash, as they were advising customers to either pay with a card or close to exact change- something that was a bit unsettling, that a restaurant was reluctant to make change as a business. That's unacceptable to me, but I usually pay with a card anyway (others in my group were paying with cash and were alarmed by their reluctance as well).
The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice and the most redeeming (but not enough) quality was their selection of music, which was nice.
Overall, I'd recommend coming to TRU only once in a while, and make sure you have plenty of time if you do.
Lovely place to have a quick bite. The only drawback is that when they are busy staff becomes clearly overwhelmed and in result the quick bite becomes rather lengthy bite! But perhaps I’m complaining too much. Times are tough. Economy is not what it used to be, so certainly they do their best. With this reservation food quality and drinks selection are both wonderful.
I decided to come here before going to work. Hoping it would be a quick lunch, I ordered a pretty simple sandwich and salad. After waiting 30 minutes I approached the server about my order and was told that my sandwich was made incorrectly and that they were remaking it. I sat there for another 15 minutes before someone from the kitchen brought my order to me, no apologies were given for the wait. I got to work late and wasn't even able to eat my sandwich till later. I'm not sure if they are understaffed right now but I didn't expect my lunch to take 45 minutes to make. This was my first time coming here, so not a great first impression.
TRU has a distinctly Chapel Hill vibe - easygoing yet classy, and the menu is customizable and delicious. The service has always been terrific, and the daily deals + the $5 cocktail Thursdays make TRU a good decision any day of the week. Definitely worth checking off the Chapel Hill restaurant bucket list.
I really want to give this place 5 stars, but can't justify it. The food and atmosphere are great. You order your customized sandwich on an iPad and it magically appears in front of you minutes later. My ONLY issue is that they were completely out of turkey and ham on TWO separate visits.
Still my favorite lunch spot in Chapel Hill, and my favorite salad anywhere.
The menu is a little more limited now, and I really don't like the system of ordering on your own phone. Bring back the iPad ordering! But it's worth the hassle.
TRU treats u right. Build your own sandwich or salad but with great atmosphere. We need to talk about how inexpensive it is to add avocado to ur sandwich as well.. when it comes to avocado? TRU is where it’s at. Definitely would recommend (especially the cookies 🤤)

Add extra avocado to anything for $.25 - a steal.
