Absolutely love this place. The drink selection is generous but not too convoluted; both wines and cocktails are of superb quality. The sandwiches and salads are all delicious, especially as they are made to order with the ingredients and styling of your choosing. The atmosphere is very open and accepting to people from all walks of life. I’ve heard TRU referred as the “LGBT bar” of UNC. Completely recommended!
required ordering from your phone only, no exceptions, and the app didn't work. So we went to one of the other dozen restaurants within the square block offering a human server, and had a great meal.
Will never be coming back to Tru Deli again. Have been waiting outside for 2 hours and was told I would be let on on the phone if I arrived when I did. After two hours we were still waiting outside. They were expecting us to wait outside until the last minute before the DUKE UNC game after waiting for 2 hours. Unacceptable. I don’t recommending supporting them.
TRU has a number of attributes that make it a regular part of my restaurant/cafe/bar rotation. They have great sandwiches and salads for lunch, a chill vibe for a glass of wine while getting some work done, and a fantastic patio for a beer while out on a walk with my dog (TRU is pet friendly).
The crowd here is eclectic and the staff is always great.
The only cautions I will give to those who’ve not been here before are as follows: (1) The ordering system takes a little getting used to. There are no preset items to order by a name or number like at a fast-food place. Every item is ordered a la carte, so don’t forget to add toppings to your sandwich or salad. (2) At very busy times, it can be a little understaffed. Be patient and remember that the kitchen for this place also produces food for folks on campus, so the wait can be kinda long. Consequently, I would not recommend this place for a “quick bite” if time is critical.
Wonderful wine bar with make your own salads and sandwiches. This is one of my favorite spots in Chapel Hill. They offer wine, craft beers on tap, and cocktails. Check for daily specials. Fridays are $4 bottles of wine and one other day if the week is $5 cocktails. The cocktails are always delicious and a good size. Highly recommended, the management and staff are great as well!
Great place to grab a drink and just relax. Very chill vibe, can stay as long as you'd like. Outdoor seating is great and inside is cozy and comforting. You'll find some low-key cocktails, wine, and some beer, create-your-own salads and sandwiches, and not much else. A few snack-type foods but not really for small plates to share or anything. Lacks variety but makes up for it in atmosphere.
Fantastic little spot in Chapel Hill without the usual college crowd. TRU Deli is a great place for a quiet drink with an impressive wine list, great beer selection, and quality spirits. It offers a "build your own sandwich" menu with a good selection and reasonable price. The staff is polite and happy to recommend a good beverage without being overbearing. Seating is available inside or on one of two patios making it a great spot to enjoy the evening. Cody, the owners lab, is more than happy to show his appreciation to customers outside and welcomes belly rubs. Great concept offers a welcoming and different experience from the usual rush for being close to campus. Can't recommend it enough!
I love the atmosphere, food and staff! Food is very tasty and relatively inexpensive for bar food. The salads are some of the cheapest and huge! Staff is friendly an engaging and they had good deals on wine when I was there. Definitely adding this place to my favorites.
A bit expensive for sandwiches, but they're great. Excellent atmosphere, ample seating, and right off Franklin Street.
You normally order on iPads, but be prepared to wait if there's technical difficulties (there are paper backups).
But other than that, ordering is simple and adheres to the recent trend of ultimate customization--with breads, meats, cheeses, veggies, condiments, and sides.
While it's not the most expansive menu, what they do, they do very well--and the customization ensures that you'll be able to get something you want.
So go there between classes, and enjoy. If you're in Durham like me, I'm not sure it's worth the drive, but if you've got some other reason to go to Chapel Hill, definitely hit it up.

The sandwiches came out exactly as we ordered, and the selection on tap was varied. Definitely coming here again!
